New Zealand Discovery Tour Itinerary                                 March 5-20, 2019.  
A journey to remember for a lifetime!
Departure: Tuesday, March 5.   From San Francisco
  
Day 1.  Thursday, March 7                                                    					   Auckland   
Arrive at Auckland International Airport. Met by driver and coach from Bayes Coach Lines.    
Explore the Auckland area including Muriwai Beach and the gannet colony.  
Accommodations: Rose Park Hotel.  Dinner & Breakfast.
Day 2.  Friday, March 8                                            		             Auckland, Waitomo, Rotorua  
Leave Auckland and travel south through the rich farmlands of the Waikato basin. 
Tour the Waitomo glowworm caves, and the Hobbiton movie set. End the day in Rotorua.   
Accommodations: Sudima Hotel.  Dinner, Breakfast & picnic lunch.  
Day 3.  Saturday, March 9                                                             			            Rotorua  
Tour of Te Puia Thermal Reserve and Maori Cultural Center.    
After lunch attend the afternoon show at the Agrodome.   
Our evening adventure is a hangi and concert at Tamaki Maori Village.     
Accommodations: Sudima Hotel. Hangi dinner & Breakfast.   
  
Day 4.  Sunday, March 10                                          			            Rotorua to Wellington   
Today we travel south, making stops at the Wairakei geothermal power station observation area,
the spectacular Huka Falls on the Waikato River, Lake Taupo and the Volcanic Plateau Visitors' Center.

hen it's on to Wellington, the capitol city.
Accommodations: Bay Plaza Hotel. Dinner, Breakfast & picnic lunch.
Day 5.  Monday, March 11                                                              		                Wellington  
Today's visits include the New Zealand Parliament, the Cathedral Church of St Paul, and Wellington Botanical Gardens. 
There is free time to visit Zealandia - the Karori Sanctuary, Te Papa National Museum and other places as you choose. 
Accommodations: Bay Plaza Hotel.    Breakfast.
Day 6.   Tuesday, March 12                                                                                          Wellington to Picton to Blenheim
This day begins by making the three-hour crossing to the South Island on the InterIsland Ferry.
The afternoon is free to explore this beautiful area.
Our evening meal will be an outdoor barbeque. 
Accommodations: Quality Hotel.  Barbeque dinner & Breakfast.
Day 7.   Wednesday, March 13                                                       Blenheim to Waipara to Christchurch
Traveling down the east coast to Kaikoura, we stop for "morning tea."   Then on to Waipara to the farm home of 
Tony & Isobel Whyte for lunch and an opportunity to experience some of New Zealand's farming.
We end our day in Christchurch.

Day 8.   Thursday, March 14                                                                                   Christchurch
We will explore Christchurch and experience its recovery from major earthquakes in 2010 and 2011.
Optional activities can include visiting the Christchurch museum and botanical gardens, the Art Center,
the Antarctic Center, ride the city tram, or take the gondola up the port hills, and more.

Day 9.   Friday, March 15                                                              Christchurch to Tekapo to Twizel
Traveling across the Canterbury Plains, we make our way into the McKenzie country, making stops
at the Tin Shed (woollen goods), Barkers in Geraldine (bakery & fruit products) and Tekapo for a picnic lunch.
Later we will have opportunity to learn about the massive McKenzie basin power project.
Accommodations:  MacKenzie Hotel.  Dinner, Breakfast & picnic lunch.
Day 10.  Saturday, March 16                                                                              Aoraki Mt Cook
We drive into the Aoraki Mt Cook National Park for a day of exploring.
Activities to choose include a boat tour on the Tasman glacier, 4WD tours, guided or independent walks / hikes, 
exploring the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Center Museum, or taking in a show in the full dome planetarium.
Dinner is in the world renowned Alpine Restaurant at The Hermitage.
Accommodations:   MacKenzie Hotel. Breakfast.
Day 11.  Sunday, March 17                                                                         Twizel to Queenstown
After crossing the Lindis Pass, we travel through the Clyde Valley into Cromwell, the heart of 
fruit growing country. From there we wind our way through the spectacular Kawarau Gorge and into 
beautiful Queenstown.
Accommodations: Scenic Hotel.  Dinner & Breakfast
Day 12.  Monday, March 18                                                                                    Queenstown
Optional morning activity:  Weather permitting - fly over the Southern Alps to Miford Sound.  
There we take a launch trip out to the Tasman Sea at the entrance to beautiful Milford Sound.
Back in Queenstown, the afternoon and evening are free to explore this adventure-rich area.

Day 13,   Tuesday, March 19                                                             		            Queenstown
A free day with optional activities including: hiking, parasailing, a jet-boat ride, biking, shopping, 
visiting Lord of the Rings sites, and more.
Early evening we steam up Lake Wakatipu on the TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak High Country Station 
for a celebratory dinner.
Accommodations: Scenic Hotel.  Breakfast.
Day 14.  Wednesday, March 20                               		             Queenstown to Auckland to USA  
There is some time for a morning walk and some last minute shopping before flying from Queenstown 
to Auckland and on to San Francisco.
Note:  Some of the group might choose to extend their travels to Australia.  Travel agent assistance is available 
to plan this if desired.
